In Singapore, we prefer to use the word "handphone" instead of calling it "mobile phone" or "cell phone". The word "handphone" is derived from the Chinese phrase "shou ji" or "shou ti dian hua" which is literally translated as handphone or hand-held phone. This term is generally accepted in Singapore as Singaporeans have a tendency to translate a Chinese word/phrase directly into English.
